THIS WEEK IN GOLF  
 

 

 

1927 - With a dramatic 1-up win over Joe Turnesa in the final match, Walter Hagen won a record 5th PGA Championship at Cedar Crest CC in Dallas, Texas.  Hagen's victory was also his 4th straight PGA Championship title and his 5th in 7 years.

1955 -  The U.S. defeated Great Britain 8-4 in the 11th Ryder Cup Competition, played at the Thunderbird Golf Club in Palm Springs, California.  The foursome of Tommy Bolt, Doug Ford, Jack Burke, Jr. and Sam Snead accounted for all of the American points.

2003 - After opening with back-to-back 63's, Annika Sorenstam runs away with her 3rd consecutive LPGA Mizuno Classic in Shiga, Japan.  Her 4-round total of 192 (-24) sets a new scoring record and leaves her 9 shots ahead of Grace Park, Sophie Gustafson and Se Ri Pak.

 


THIS WEEK -  The Annika "Farewell Tour" concludes this week.  Annika Sorenstam makes her final  appearance before heading into retirement at the ADT Championship, the final regular season event on the LPGA Tour.  The Tournament brings together the top 32 players in women's golf.  Lorena Ochoa will defend her title at the Trump International GC in West Palm Beach, Florida.  On the PGA European Tour, Colin Montgomerie defends his title at the OMEGA Mission Hills World Cup in China.
